What is Azimuth?

Definition:

Azimuth represents a direction that is measured from the observer's location. It is the angle from the North direction, and is usually represented as the number of degree from North. Using this scale, North is at 0° or 360°, East is 90°, South is 180° and West is 270°.
Azimuth is often paired with an Altitude value when describing a three-dimensional direction. Altitude is measured in degrees above the horizon and can take a value between 0° and 90°. An altitude 90° above the horizon is called the Zenith, the position directly above the observer.
Many telescopes use a simple, two-azis mount which can turn left-right and up-down. These are called Alt-Az mounts since their directions of movement correspond to altitude (up-down) and azimuth (left-right).
